One joy of capitalism is seeing realism triumph.
In this case the paper papers who have contrived for us to pay good money so they can harm us. Until now, we have. But the electronic news is so much nicer – tailored to what Mrs Average wants who is basically nice – that we are abandoning the biased histrionics of owner-ridden hacks in favour of our own sort.
The driving force is less interest than money: no advertiser wants their product to be contaminated with Telegraph-style anti-good cant.
Curiously, this wisdom is likely to spread. Corporate ethics are currently being driven largely by fear of litigation, as in the break up of ICI whose surviving core is as harmless as one gets in chemicals. Coupled with this is the Mr Nice image of the salesman. Truth will out, though. A school is successful if its kids go home saying what a great day/lessons they had. BT will only be successful if MD Verwaayen genuinely believes as well as saying that the hero of the company is the doorstep engineer, and can make her feel good about herself. Including enough pay for her own kids to earn as much as he does.
