Autistic, asbergers, diet overload, sleep underload, dyslexias, spoilt child, tired child, growing child, abused child, rebel, triggered resentment, bullied and bullying child (and teacher ), guilty child – often parental strife, unloved child whether MacPherson unloved or genuine victim of PNS, tough adolescence, weak coping strategies, sensitive child, unethical child.
Most children have or go through at least some of these, mostly sub-clinical.
Small wonder teaching is the most rewarding and challenging job ever.
School’s current habit of hunting good grades can put the troubled lot in one room.. Boroughs use the tactic for whole schools, then have to bring in a hit squad. The magic wrought by a good executive head and a team of classroom assistants can go a long way to sort this. Society uses jails, borstals, conscription. Boot camp has to be on the agenda for ASBO breakers.
Traditional Western medicine uses reassurance, a pill and the knife in that order. Keyhole surgery, the soluble stitch and soluble stent etc are bringing change. There is much progress in education too.
But until we can differentiate the transient problems in each child and use timely strategies, use teachers to teach and not do multiple therapies, and give all kids a driving sense of purpose, many teachers are going to lack the motivation for all of us to succeed.
