*HG Wells’s seminal Time Traveller in the near future met these two human variants: one above ground, living gently in warm daylight, graced with material possessions but vacuously. Night was less kind, as some would disappear. The Morlocks of course, underground factory owners, were farming these flaccid Eloi for provender.
Somewhat as Texas is farming three-strike labour for federal grants. And Britain is using independent schools to breed morlock leaders.
Our real challenge is to recognise and then direct the process so those with conscience can sleep at night. Like the technical fixes of cellular survival (union into organs that themselves are united in viable bodies) and global warming (agreement to block increasingly intense solar radiation with controllable window), it can be done. Easier if early, of course.
