Dynamic in that each day’s changes affect tomorrow’s learning.
Good vibrations, daily, from the top are essential to each inhabitant.
Placemen and worse cannot succeed: the kids innately and the teachers analytically pick up and amplify the subtexts. Feedback between the need to be loyal.
Even strong management teams cannot carry a weak head.
At some schools the Head’s probation is marked with culture boost – say a club membership – or quiet bonus. And the Head passes the perks on.
Moralities that drive schools include global awareness, charitable contributions, team membership and visits from ‘nobility’. Issues can be tackled: bullying, learning by computer, unruly kids and duff parenting. The most effective empower kids to be positive and contribute and feel good about their impact. Homework needs to be appreciated by the doer, valued by the school, and related to what the kids see as important. What they talk about on the bus shows how effective homework is being. Busy work it ain’t. We all do collaborative. Interaction is all, to grow in mental pattern forming like memory, words, and feeling.
At teenage time the most dramatic area to explore is the developing use of the pre-frontal cortex: emotions, relations, people skills, and attitude control. Honesty works here I think: my best teaching and learning has been when the kids know I won’t lie to them or make deliberate mistakes. I was last week asked in mid astrophysics lesson straight out ‘Do you believe in God, sir? And gave the honest answer. Not a good experience for my culture – the school has a chaplain and tales observance seriously, but better I hope than the standard work around.
